WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DRIVE?
Category C1 (3.5 to 7.5 tonnes)
For those drivers who passed their car test from January 1997 onwards, and want to drive medium goods vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes you will need to take a test in this category. After passing this test you will be able to tow a trailer restricted to 750 kgs. If you passed your car test prior to January 1997 you should have C1 automatically on your licence - however it is always advisable to check.
Category C1+E (3.5 tonnes + trailer over 750 kgs)
If you want to tow a larger trailer a further test is required - Category C1+E. Once you have passed the C1 test then you can progress to the C1+E test. If you have C1 through "grandfather" rights please read the relevant paragraph under General Information below.
Category C (Rigid)
All drivers who want to drive large goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes this is the licence which will cover you to drive any rigid vehicle regardless of axles. Having passed this category you are able to tow a trailer restricted to 750 kgs. To tow a trailer over this weight a further test is required - Category C+E.
Category C+E (Articulated)
This category is required to drive an articulated or draw bar large goods vehicle. Since January 1997 the licensing laws mean that candidates can no longer take a Category C+E test without having first obtained Category C.
GENERAL INFORMATION
For all the above categories the first step is to obtain provisional entitlement on the candidate's current car licence. Candidates with a Category C licence should already have Category C+E provisional entitlement - but it is wise to check first. If you have C1 by "grandfather" rights and want to tow a larger trailer you will have to apply to DVLA for the provisional entitlement of C1+E to be added.
To do this forms D2 (Licence Application Form) and D4 (Medical Report) must be completed and sent to DVLA, Swansea with the candidate's current driving licence for the provisional entitlement to be added.
