COMPULSORY BASIC TRAINING (CBT)
CBT is the starting point for all learner motorcyclists and you are required to complete a course before riding on the road.
Also, with effect from 1 February 2001, all new car drivers wishing to validate the full moped entitlement granted with a full UK car licence, must complete a CBT course. If you obtained a full UK car licence before February 2001, you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped. However, it would be advisable to complete a CBT course because you will then be much safer and more knowledgeable on the road and some insurance companies require you to complete one to validate the insurance policy. (A moped has an engine not over 50 cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kph which is approximately 31 mph.).
WHAT DOES A CBT COURSE INVOLVE?
CBT is not a test and there is no exam - it is course of training you are required to complete satisfactorily and you have to demonstrate that you are safe to be on the road. The course consists of the following five elements:
A. Introduction
B. Practical off road training
C. Practical off road riding
D. Practical on road training
E. Practical on road riding
The five elements have to be completed in sequence and you will only move to the next element when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level. A good knowledge of the Highway Code is also essential.
CBTs are carried out at our site at the Livestock Market in Salisbury. You will need to bring with you your UK driving licence. If you have a photocard licence, you will also need to bring with you the counterpart licence too.
WHAT CAN I RIDE AFTER COMPLETING A CBT COURSE?
Full UK car licence holders
A motorcycle up to a maximum of 125cc, manual or automatic, with a power output of no more than 14.6 bhp (11 kW). You will have to display L-plates and you may not take passengers. You will not be allowed to ride on motorways.
If you only want to ride a 50cc moped and you have a full car licence issued before February 2001, you do not need to complete a CBT, but we would advise you to do so. You are able to carry passengers and you do not need to display L-plates. A moped is defined as a motorcycle with a maximum design speed not exceeding 31 mph and with an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc.
If you want to ride a moped and your licence was issued after February 2001 you have to complete a CBT.
Provisional UK licence holders
With a provisional UK car licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement (Category A), once you have completed a CBT allows you to ride a motorcycle up to a maximum of 125cc, manual or automatic, with a power output of not greater than 14.6 bhp (11kW). You will have to display L-plates and you may not take passenger or ride on motorways.
If you are under 17 years old you will only have provisional moped entitlement (Category P) on your licence. Once you have completed a CBT you will be able to ride a moped with a maximum design speed not exceeding 31 mph and with an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc. You will have to display L-plates and you will not be able to carry passengers.
HOW LONG DOES A CBT CERTIFICATE LAST?
All new CBT certificates issued after 1 February 2001 validating a provisional moped or provisional motorcycle entitlement last for two years. You will have to retake a CBT course if you do not pass the motorcycle theory and practical tests within the two year life of the CBT certificate if you want to contine riding.
A CBT certificate validating full moped (a 50 cc motorcycle with a top speed of 31 mph) entitlement on a full UK car licence does not have an expiry date.
